ICDAS is a simple, logical, evidence-based system for detection and classification of caries in dental education, clinical practice, dental research, and dental public health.

It moves the profession away from the simplistic diagnosis of "No obvious decay" or "Obvious decay" to a more detailed level of diagnosis to improve patient care and mre precisely monitor caries development in research.

ICDAS provides three levels of caries diagnosis to allow flexibility in implementation:

 


FULL ICDAS

0 No evidence of caries
1 Initial caries
2 Distinct visual change in enamel
3 Localised enamel breakdown due to caries with no visible dentine
4 Underlying dark shadow from dentine
5 Distinct cavity with visible dentine
6 Extensive distinct cavity with visible dentine

 

MODIFIED ICDAS

0 No evidence of caries
A Initial caries
3 Localised enamel breakdown due to caries with no visible dentine
4 Underlying dark shadow from dentine
5 Distinct cavity with visible dentine
6 Extensive distinct cavity with visible dentine 

 

MERGED

0 No evidence of caries
A Initial caries
B Moderate caries
C Extensive caries
